The Modern Meat recalls products containing U.S.-grown onions

The Modern Meat Inc. is recalling Modern brand Tarragon Remoulade and Modern Meat brand 'Crab' Cakes, made with onions grown by Thomson International Inc., due to possible salmonella contamination.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says 339 people have become ill from salmonella contamination linked to a recall of the U.S.-grown onions. The people who became ill ate red onions at home, at restaurants and in residential care settings.

Modern Meat's recall covers the following products sold in British Columbia and Alberta:


  • Tarragon Remoulade in 250-mL tubs with UPC 8 47004 00009 0

  • Modern Meat 'Crab' Cakes in 300-g packs with UPC 8 47004 00014 4

  • Modern Meat 'Crab' Cakes sold in 6 × 50 g packs with UPC 8 47004 00014 4


The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.
