The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has expanded its initial recall on red onions imported from the U.S. to include additional varieties. The onions have been linked to 120 confirmed cases of salmonella in Canada.
The government agency said the recall now covered red, yellow, white, and sweet yellow onions grown by Thomson International Inc., Bakersfield, California, and imported from the U.S.
The Public Health Agency of Canada is working with federal and provincial health partners as well as the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate the outbreak of salmonella infections, which now spans seven provinces.
CFIA continues to investigate and is ensuring the onions are pulled from store shelves.
