Food Basics had a major Thursday, expanding its Ontario footprint with two new store openings.

The Metro-owned discount banner cut the ribbon on stores in Whitby and Toronto's North York community, bringing its total store count to 160.

At around 33,000 square feet, both locations are described as contemporary, offering a tailored product selection to reflect the diversity of Southern Ontario. This includes private-label products, locally sourced products, fresh meat and produce, along with fresh BBQ chicken.

The North York store features a pharmacy providing vaccinations, medication reviews, and minor ailment assessments.

In a press release, John Manax, Food Basics' vice-president of operations, said the company was excited to offer more ways for residents of Whitby and North York to save on quality products.

To further its commitment to the community, Food Basics will donate $5,000 to a food charity in each market.
