Online survey to help shape national food policy

The federal government is asking Canadians what food issues matter to them through an online survey that will help shape a nationwide food policy.

Feedback will provide the government with a better understanding of Canadians' priorities around food-related issues. "A food policy is a way to address issues related to the production, processing, distribution, and consumption of food," according to the survey website. The online survey is open until July 27 and is one in a number of activities planned to solicit public opinion.

The public has the opportunity to weigh in on four key areas:

• Increasing access to affordable food;


• improving health and food safety;


• conserving soil, water, and air; and


• growing more high-quality food.

“Food plays a critical role in the health and well-being of Canadians, while also having a direct impact on our environment, economy, and communities,” said Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay, in a press release announcing the launch of the online survey.

“Developing this food policy is an exciting opportunity for Canadians to have their say about how government can help address those opportunities and challenges that exist in our food system,” MacAulay added.

Stakeholders and policy makers will also have an opportunity to share their views during the Food Policy for Canada Summit in Ottawa next month.
