T&T opens 21st store in Markham

1/5/2012

On Thursday, T&T Supermarket opened its 21st store, its 8th in Ontario, and started the countdown to Lunar New Year (Jan. 23) celebrations and the Year of the Dragon with drummers and lion dancers.

The 50,000-sq.-ft. store located at Woodbine and 16 Ave., took over the No Frills and National Sports stores, and is the largest T&T store in the province, eastern region according to Paul Ho, T&T marketing manager.

The store puts the emphasis on fresh, with produce being the first section followed by the largest seafood section in Markham.

The Woodbine store, located in the municipality of Markham in the Greater Toronto area, showcases several new store features such as a health and wellness aisle, bubble tea, ready-to-eat oysters and fresh noodles that are hand-made every day.

“T&T offers the Chinese community a home away from home,” said Cindy Lee, T&T CEO. “We also offer Chinese roots, culture and food to mainstream Canadians.”

The health and wellness section is the first for the retailer and will offer delicacies such as bird’s nest soup, energy-boosting drinks like ginseng powder and chicken essence and no-sugar egg rolls.

Near the deli, there is also the ginseng chicken soups packs that feature all the ingredients needed to prepare the traditional Asian healthy dish.

T&T is the only Chinese supermarket chain that carries the certified Angus Beef brand as well as antibiotic-free chicken, lamb and pork.

There are also more than 39 different kinds of mushrooms and 109 different chili sauces, said Tina Lee, T&T's director of strategy and operations.

Also, the outlet will run a Discover T&T program, where recipe cards for key Asian foods are available to consumers.

On shelves, there are product description cards to provide information on multicultural food products.

For the grand opening of the Woodbine store, more than $50,000 in gifts will be given away during the opening weekend.

Customers visiting Jan. 5 to 8 will also receive a lucky red envelope, or lai see, filled with discount coupons.

In six months, another T&T store is set to open in Unionville, a suburban village in Markham, in a multi-use building that will house both offices and condos.

Since the first store opened in 1993, T&T Supermarket’s vision has been to be the best Asian supermarket chain in Canada.
