Unilever to close Bramalea plant

Dry mix production will be transferred to Missouri
5/8/2014

Unilever announced Thursday morning it will close its manufacturing plant in Bramalea, Ont.

The plant was primarily used for manufacturing dry mixes, such as soups, sauces, sides and gravies.  Dry mix production will now be transferred to a plant in the U.S.

The decision came after a review revealed more than 80% of product produced at the Barmalea plant was shipped to the U.S .

“Unilever made the strategic decision to make its investment closer to where the bulk of the product was consumed,” said John Le Boutillier, Unilever’s president and CEO.

Unilever said it will continue to invest in its other Canadian facilities, including upgrades and enhancements. Remaining manufacturing plants in Simcoe and Rexdale produce ice cream, margarine and mayonnaise products.

Bramalea’s plant is expected to close next March, with about 280 salaried and hourly employees affected.
