Walmart has opened its first distribution centre in Atlantic Canada – a $50 million facility in Moncton, N.B.

The 223,000 square foot operation will distribute fresh and frozen groceries to more than 40 Walmart stores in the region.

Walmart says its east coast customers will benefit from improve product availability in-store and online, while local suppliers can access expanded opportunities.

Equipped to process more than two million cases of product each month, the new distribution centre employs 130 people.

As part of Walmart’s commitment to becoming a regenerative company, the centre – which sits on nearly 19 acres of land – aims to reduce long-haul truck deliveries and remove millions of kilometres from the supply chain each year.

“Today is an incredible day for Walmart, Moncton and New Brunswick as we officially open our first distribution centre in Atlantic Canada,” said Gonzalo Gebara, president and CEO of Walmart Canada, in a statement. “We’re strengthening our best-in-class supply chain network with distribution centres from coast-to-coast to ensure product gets into the hands of our customers even faster. We take great pride seeing our associates, customers and communities benefit from these investments in the form of jobs, better product availability and economic impact.”

The Moncton distribution centre is part of Walmart Canada’s $3.5 billion investment in its supply chain.

As part of the opening, Walmart donated $12,000 to Harvest House Atlantic, a local non-profit organization that works to end homelessness.

The distribution centre is also paired with Food Depot Alimentaire (FDA), which serves food banks, community kitchens, school programs and other agencies across New Brunswick.
