Wonderbrands ending sliced bread production in Sudbury: Union
Wonderbrands is ending sliced-bread production at its Sudbury, Ont. facility, with approximately 50 workers losing their jobs, according to the union representing the workers at the plant.
In a blog post on its website, Local 175 of the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW), said the decision would impact both full-time and part-time positions.
In a statement to CBC News, Wonderbrands said the decision was not made lightly and was driven by a sustained industry-wide shift in bread consumption. They said they remain committed to maintaining bakery activity in Sudbury and supporting their employees through this transition.
The union said it was actively engaged in discussions with Wonderbrands to “assist affected members to receive the support they need, including transition programs, retraining opportunities, and support services.”
FGF Brands in Toronto acquired Wonderbrands in 2021 as part of a $1.2-billion deal for certain fresh and frozen bakery assets of Weston Foods, which is owned by George Weston Ltd.
Wonderbrands bread brands include Wonder, D’Italiano and Country Harvest.
