CPMA award winners announced at conference

At the 87th Canadian Produce Marketing Association annual convention and trade show this week key awards were given out to produce industry leaders.

Among recipients was Anthony Bisogno, who received the Mary Fitzgerald Award for demonstrating during his first five years with the Burnac Produce group of companies a passion for the industry.

The Produce News Fresh Health Award was given to Timiskaming Health Unit of New Liskeard, Ont., for its promotion of health and wellness programs.

And Bernadette Hamel, vice-president of national procurement of produce for Metro Inc., received the Packer’s Canadian Produce Person of the Year. She has been an active member of the industry, playing a role in both regional and national associations.

The CPMA Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Glenn Baty, who joined the association’s board of directors in 1991. He chaired the association’s member services committee and played a founding role in the Fruit and Vegetable Dispute Resolution Corporation.

In addition, awards were given out recognizing the efforts of trade show exhibitors and product innovation.
The best booth award winners were:

First place: Peak of The Market;



Second place: Mexico Pavilion;



Third place: Fresh Direct Produce



They were judged on overall booth presentation, company identity, product presentation, design elements, booth activity and interpersonal skills and professionalism.
The best new product award was handed out to Naturipe Farms for their Mighty Blues product, and was judged on originality and product appearance and overall convenience and benefits for consumers.



Next year the CPMA conference and tradeshow will take place in Toronto, April 17-19, 2013 at the Direct Energy Centre.
