Australian study finds safety standards not met by supermarket deli meats

New research released by the University of Adelaide in Australia shows about three quarters of deli meats bought in supermarket deli sections contain bacterial levels that failed to meet food standard guidelines.

Researchers picked about 174 samples in the greater Adelaide area, with 77% revealing signs of poor hygiene.

It's enough to make you sick.

"Although no recognized food poisoning pathogens <...>were found on these meats, the high bacterial count suggests that hygiene has been compromised," said Michael Reichel, professor of veterinary public health. "Such out-of-control processes are also susceptible to contamination with serious food poisoning organisms."

Reichel suggested supermarkets and retailers take a close look at their processes and staff compliance.
