Bikers, hikers and anyone else looking for healthy, non-perishable meals on-the-go, can add oatmeal to the list.
Launched across Canada this month, Munk Pack single-serve squeezable pouches are made with gluten-free whole grains and fruit, which boast high in Omega 3s and fibre—and have a 12-month shelf-life.
“Oatmeal has always been a breakfast and all-day snack so the idea was to take this on-the go-in a format that adults would appreciate,” says Michelle Glienke, co-founder of Greenwich, Conn.-based Munk Pack Inc. “A lot of work went into the development of the package because oatmeal is a unique consistency and we wanted to make sure we didn’t lose the texture.”
Given the target audience is the active adult, the two flavour choices in Canada also cater to an adult palate with Apple Quinoa Cinnamon and Blueberry Acai Flax. “People are conscious about quality ingredients and we think they’ll appreciate the fact the packs are vegan, kosher and gluten-free,” says Glienke.
By positioning the product with adult grab-and-go products, such as natural energy bars, the company says it is tapping into an energy bar market which has seen a 60% growth in US sales volume between 2008-2013 according to SPINS data. “You can place us in the aisles with the energy bars because it will be the same type of consumer grabbing our product,” says Glienke.
Munk Pack, which launched last year the U.S., is being distributed in Canada through Horizon and UNFI. The product retails for $2.99 per unit, with 6 units to a pack.
