Sleeman Breweries—Immersed in tradition
As Canadian Grocer marks 140 years of covering the evolution of grocery in Canada, we’re shining a spotlight on some of the standout companies that have helped build—and continue to shape—the industry.
Here, we look at Sleeman Breweries:
Then
In 1983, an unexpected moment unlocked a legacy John Sleeman never knew he’d inherit. He discovered his family had once been among Canada’s most respected brewers—a history powerful enough to inspire a bold new vision for the future. Seeing artifacts like an original Sleeman bottle and his grandfather’s handwritten recipe book, John recognized an opportunity to revive the Sleeman name and honour a brewing tradition that had shaped generations.
Inspired by the family legacy and driven by his own entrepreneurial ambition, John set out to rebuild the Sleeman Brewery, guided by authenticity, quality and a commitment to innovation rooted in the family’s story.
Now
Today, Sleeman Breweries is Canada’s third-largest brewer, stewarding an expansive portfolio of Canadian brewery brands including Sleeman, Okanagan Spring, Unibroue and Wild Rose. The company’s wider portfolio also includes well‑known global brands such as Pabst, Old Milwaukee and Sapporo, offering Canadians a diverse range of trusted favourites.
Since joining the Sapporo Group in 2006, Sleeman has continued to evolve, adopting streamlined, efficient and quality‑driven practices that support both innovation and long‑term growth.
“Sleeman Breweries is successful because of our unique blend of tradition and innovation,” says Mike Minami, president and CEO of Sleeman Breweries. “We have a rich history in our DNA that we evolve and build on every day.”
In 2024, Sleeman expanded into the rapidly growing non‑alcoholic category with two zero‑alcohol beverages: Sapporo 0.0% and Sleeman Zero+, both emerging as strong contenders in the category.
Sleeman Breweries employs more than 1,050 people across Canada, with core operations in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec. Its longevity in a competitive market reflects a deep commitment to doing the right thing—earning recognition as a local top employer and one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for the past four years.
Next
Sleeman Breweries continues to expand its portfolio to meet evolving consumer tastes. New innovations rolling out across Canada include Sapporo Lemon Sour Premium Cocktail, Pabst Half & Half Iced Tea and Lemonade, and higher‑ABV offerings such as Sleeman Gold Strong Lager and Pabst Max Strong Beer. These innovations clearly demonstrate Sleeman’s continued forward momentum.
“With a legacy spanning back to 1834, Sleeman Breweries has a unique ability to connect Canadians through a shared appreciation for great beer,” says Dana Brochu, the company's vice-president of marketing. “Our legacy isn’t just about the recipes we’ve carried forward—it’s about the entrepreneurial spirit that drives us to evolve. By honouring our past while pushing forward with quality and innovation, we ensure Sleeman remains a trusted favourite across Canada.”
As a proud part of Canada’s brewing story, Sleeman continues to produce high-quality beers and develop innovative new products. The history behind the brand is nearly as rich—and refreshing—as the beers Canadians enjoy today.
