After years working for Walmart in South America and in the United States, Horacio (Haio) Barbeito is heading north to assume the role of president and CEO of Walmart Canada.

As of October, pending work authorization, Barbeito will take over the role from outgoing president and CEO Lee Tappenden. The company said Tappenden would work with Barbeito through October and then move on to a global role with the retailer's International Support Team before his departure at the end of January.

Barbeito joined Walmart nearly 25 years ago, starting as a trainee buyer and moving up to leadership roles including his 2012 appointment as CEO of Walmart Argentina, then CEO of Walmart Argentina and Chile in 2015.

In a statement, Dirk Van den Berghe, EVP, Walmart and regional CEO, Asia and Canada, said of Barbeito: "During his time in Argentina and Chile, Haio has led the business to consistently deliver strong performance while at the same time focusing on people through digital talent acquisition, talent development, and diversity and inclusion–resulting in increased engagement across the business."
