Walmart Canada opened a new Supercentre in Fort McMurray, Alta. on Thursday (Oct. 22)

Located at 1053 K. Sawatzky Boulevard, the Supercentre replaces the retailer’s location in the city’s downtown, which closed on Wednesday.

Spanning 140,000 square feet, Walmart said the store is nearly 50% larger than its former location.

The relocation brings Walmart’s full grocery assortment to Fort McMurray customers for the first time.

Offerings include fresh produce, meat, dairy, bakery items and packaged goods, in addition to Walmart’s general merchandise assortment.

The location also includes a pharmacy and vision centre.

Walmart said the new Supercentre is designed to serve customers in Fort McMurray and families across the broader Wood Buffalo region, including those who travel into the city to shop and stock up on essentials. Pickup and delivery are also available.

The opening is part of Walmart Canada’s $6.5 billion investment to grow and modernize its store and supply chain network across Canada.

“Customers have been asking for a broader grocery offering in Fort McMurray, and we’re proud to now bring that to this community,” said Tim Cooper, chief operations officer of Walmart Canada, in a press release. “This new Supercentre gives customers more ways to shop for the food, household essentials and general merchandise they need, while continuing to deliver the value they count on from Walmart.”

The new location is home to more than 200 local associates.

“Preparing this Supercentre while continuing to serve customers at our former location took incredible teamwork,” said Sam Stilborn, store manager. “Our associates stayed focused on customers, supported one another and brought tremendous care to every part of the transition. I’m proud of what they have accomplished and excited to welcome the community into our new store.”

To mark the grand opening, Walmart presented donations to the Autism Society of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and Second Chance Animal Rescue Society.
