Where are they now? Catching up with 2023 Generation Next winner Hussain Bandali of Walmart Canada
Canadian Grocer’s Generation Next Awards celebrate emerging leaders (under 40) who are
shaping Canada’s grocery industry. Ahead of this year’s nomination deadline (Sept. 11), we checked in with 2023 winner Hussain Bandali, senior director, new stores and store layout, Walmart Canada to find out what's new in his career.
How has your career evolved since winning the Generation Next Award?
Since receiving the award, I've had the opportunity to lead several different teams and take on increasingly complex areas of the business. Each role has given me a broader perspective on retail and challenged me in different ways, while helping me grow as both a leader and a problem solver.
How do you measure success today versus when you won the award?
Earlier in my career, success was often measured by my own contributions and accomplishments. Today, I measure success by what my team achieves. My role is to create the right environment, remove obstacles, and help others do their best work. Seeing my team grow and succeed is the most rewarding part of my job.
How do you stay motivated and inspired?
I've been fortunate to work on some incredibly interesting projects throughout my career at Walmart Canada. Being part of a company that's focused on growth and innovation, while also having the opportunity to learn from and leverage the scale of a global retailer, keeps every day interesting and provides constant opportunities to learn.
What career advice would you give your younger self?
Have a plan, but don't be afraid if it takes a few unexpected turns. I never imagined I'd be doing what I'm doing today, and many of the experiences that have shaped my career weren't ones I could have planned for. Stay curious, embrace new opportunities and trust that each experience will help prepare you for what's next.
