Where are they now? Catching up with 2024 Generation Next winner Ryan Mallany of Kruger Products
Canadian Grocer’s Generation Next Awards celebrate emerging leaders (under 40) who are
shaping Canada’s grocery industry. Ahead of this year’s nomination deadline (Sept. 11), we checked in with 2024 winner Ryan Mallany, director of sustainability for Kruger Products, to find out what's new in his career.
How has your career evolved since winning the Generation Next Award?
"I’ve continued to take on new responsibilities at Kruger Products, progressing into my current role as director, sustainability. Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to lead strategic initiatives that support our Reimagine 2030 sustainability goals, work collaboratively across the business, and help embed sustainability into how we operate and grow."
How do you measure success today versus when you won the award?
"At its core, I still measure success the same way I always have: by the impact I’m able to make. Today, I have a broader perspective on what that impact looks like. Success isn’t just about environmental outcomes, it’s about helping the business create long-term value, building trust with customers and consumers, and ensuring sustainability is integrated into everyday decision-making."
How do you stay motivated and inspired?
"I was drawn to sustainability because I wanted my work to contribute to something bigger than myself and help protect the natural world. What continues to motivate me today is knowing that as my ability to influence grows, so does the potential impact of the work. I’m also inspired by the colleagues and partners working toward the same goal of creating a more sustainable future."
What career advice would you give your younger self?
"Stay curious and keep asking questions, especially when someone says, 'That’s how we’ve always done it.' Embrace continuous learning, be open to different perspectives, and focus on progress over perfection. I’d also encourage my younger self to spend time understanding how other parts of the business operate. The most impactful solutions often emerge when you can connect different priorities and bring people together around a common goal."
