Maple Leaf Foods to consolidate U.S. plant protein production

Maple Leaf Foods Inc. is consolidating its U.S. plant protein operations into a single facility.

The move will see the company wind down production at its plants in Seattle, Washington and Turner Falls, Massachusetts. 

Maple Leaf Foods’ facility in Indianapolis, Indiana will serve as its Plant Protein Centre of Excellence. The company said the facility will support its plant protein bands more competitively. 

The transition is expected to occur in phases, wrapping up in the fourth quarter of 2027.

Maple Leaf Foods said the decision follows a review of its plant protein manufacturing footprint. 

Curtis Frank, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Foods, said declining volumes in the plant-based category have left the company’s manufacturing network underutilized. 

"This decision does not change our commitment to the plant protein category," Frank said in a press release. "In fact, we believe it strengthens the foundation of the business. Our recent relaunch of Yves Veggie Cuisine is complementary to this strategy, bringing a leading brand and additional volume into our portfolio and helping us create greater scale and improve the economics of our consolidated manufacturing footprint."

Production will continue at the Seattle and Turners Falls facilities during the transition period.
