New York milk producers facing more obstacles from Canada

An American senator is lobbying for New York milk producers in a trade spat with Canada.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer says a targeted pricing policy was recently implemented in Ontario that's designed to discourage Canadian cheesemakers from using imported, ultra-filtered milk from the U.S. in their products.

The new pricing policy essentially sets the price of Canada's products below that of New York's ultra-filtered milk imports, and Schumer says that hurts farmers in the Empire State.

Schumer met Thursday with Canadian officials and urged them to reverse the policy.

He says the new dairy trade and pricing policies fly directly in the face of trade agreements signed by the two countries. e says New York producers, who have enjoyed duty-free access under the North American Free Trade Agreement, just want an even playing field.
